A Metta (Lovingkindness) Meditation

I have recorded this meditation. You may just relax and follow my voice, or continue to read on your own:

In metta meditation, lovingkindness is directed toward ourselves and then, in a sequence of expansion, towards somebody we love already. Somebody we are neutral towards. Somebody we have difficulty with. And ultimately toward all beings everywhere without distinction.

Choose a particular object of meditation, which is the metta phrase, such as “May I be happy.” Hold the phrase in your heart just the way you’d hold something fragile and precious in your hand.

Once your breathing has brought you into a space of meditation, allow these words to seep into your reality:

(Starting with the self)
“Let me be happy,
Let me be peaceful, at ease,
Let me be free to live and love fully,
And let me love myself just the way I am.”

(Next someone you love)
“Let ____ be happy,
Let them be peaceful, at ease,
Let them be free to live and love fully,
And let them love themselves just the way they are.”

(Next someone you only know in passing)

(Next someone you hate or are actively in conflict with)

(End with everyone)
“Let all beings be happy,
Let us be peaceful, at ease,
Let us be free to live and love fully,
And let us love ourselves just the way we are.”

Close this time and space with moments of quiet breathing, knowing that “I Am love.”

Gratitude to Cathy Merchant for sharing her personal version.
